Dive into the groundbreaking “New Reserves and Resources (NRR)” framework, which addresses the critical need for transparent assessment of newly discovered global oil and gas reserves amidst mounting climate concerns. Even though discoveries proceed apace, there is no publicly available source identifying the CO2-equivalent in newly discovered emissions that have been added in the past year.  Using currently available public data—last year’s additions range from 20 to 45 billion tons—an incredibly large amount of uncertainty.

This could be solved by information that is likely already in the hands of governments.  The NRR framework emphasizes tracking embedded emissions in new discoveries, urging standardized reporting by governments to inform global strategies and facilitate the energy transition – all with major implications for the global carbon budget.
