Carbon emissions at Germany’s coal fired utilities, RWE & Uniper, are substantially above EU average. Germany needs to build new gas for coal to close by 2030 for security of supply. This is a major technical and financial challenge, with a capacity market not due before 2028. However, the rewards from closing coal early are enormous. Much needed renewables capex would be easier to fund; RWE risks being a major industry outlier with its current 2030 coal exit deadline.
